How to verify a supplement supplier's GMP certificate
A GMP credential may cover a particular facility and programme, not every product bearing the manufacturer's name. Before relying on it for supplier qualification or marketing, establish exactly what it covers and who issued that assurance.
Collect evidence, not just files.
Check issuer and programme, legal holder, actual site, activity scope and current status separately. Matching a company name is insufficient. Facility assurance does not automatically verify a product or lot, or establish permission to display a mark on your label.
Start with the question the document must answer
Start with the purpose. Qualifying a manufacturer, satisfying a particular customer's requirement and using a certification mark in advertising are different decisions. A credential can help with the first without satisfying the other two. Do not carry a programme name into another country or sales channel without checking the current requirements and mark-use rules for that context.
Find the issuer's contact through its independent official website, not only through the supplied PDF. A directory, where available, is one confirmation route. Record when you checked, which identifiers you searched and what the source actually returned. No record, unavailable service and partial match must remain separate findings; none proves forgery or an unlawful supplier by itself.
A genuine certificate can still fail to match your intended use. The holder may operate several sites, or the credential may cover packing rather than the manufacturing stage you need. Separate authenticity, scope match and validity. A replacement PDF following an address change should have a documented relationship to the previous credential, not silently erase the earlier review.
What to check and how to record a gap
QA recommendations to adapt to the material and intended decision. Not a universal statutory list or an automatic compliance test.
| Check | Request evidence | Common gap |
|---|---|---|
| Issuer and programme | Full issuing body, programme or standard identifier and independent contact route. | GMP is assumed to be one universal certification without an identified programme. |
| Number and original | Certificate number, original file, issue date and documented issuer-confirmation route. | A logo screenshot, sales declaration or copied number replaces the credential. |
| Holder and facility | Legal entity, address and match to the site actually producing your SKU. | The brand matches, but the legal company or production address does not. |
| Activity scope | Products, processes, activities and exclusions in the document and attachments. | A warehousing or packing scope is expanded to cover the whole manufacturing process. |
| Validity and current status | Dates, any established suspension/revocation and the independent check date. | An unexpired PDF is treated as proof that the programme status is still current. |
| Mark and assertion | Mark-use rules and the exact proposed wording of the certification assertion. | A facility mark on packaging implies certification of the particular supplement. |
| History and consumers | Previous revision, change reason and materials/SKUs relying on the credential. | A changed or expired reference remains attached to several products without review. |
A plausible file, an unconfirmed scope
Working example: the credential names the manufacturer and site A, while your SKU is made at site B. Company identity matches; facility coverage does not. Record ‘facility match not established’, request the applicable credential and seek confirmation. Do not mark the product verified, but do not accuse the supplier of forgery on the basis of this discrepancy either.
Fictional example, not an assessment of a real supplier. Missing information, mismatch and a negative result are different findings.

Received does not mean verified
- Record the exact assertion, intended use and actual manufacturing site. Do not assess the acronym GMP in isolation.
- Receive the original and attachments. Keep fields extracted from the file distinct from independent status confirmation.
- Check an official issuer route where available. Retain the answer, date, identifiers and retrieval limitations.
- Compare holder, location, programme, activities and dates. Distinguish established, mismatched and unresolved findings.
- Define allowed reuse and the next review trigger. A site or status change may affect several dependent SKUs.
Common questions
Is a GMP certificate a product certificate?
Do not assume so. Identify the programme and certification object. Process or facility evidence does not decide formulation, batch results, ingredient-form eligibility or permission to use every marketing claim.
What if the certificate is not in a directory?
It may be a search gap, a scope the directory does not cover or a case needing direct confirmation. Record an unresolved status and request clarification. A missing result alone is not proof of fraud.
Will this certificate satisfy a marketplace?
That is a separate channel requirement. Check its current process and accepted scope. This article establishes neither Amazon acceptance nor acceptance by a particular TIC organisation.
